Instagram is the most used platform for grooming crimes, report finds
1 mrt 12:37 - The most used platform for groomers is Instagram, according to an NSPCC report based on police data.  Grooming is defined by the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) as the act of building an emotional connection with a child to gain their trust for the purpose of sexual abuse or exploitation. The NSPCC report found that grooming cases involves one major social media platform or another in 70 percent of cases where the method is revealed by police, with Instagram being the most popular.  SEE ALSO: TikTok fined $5.7 million for collecting children's data The NSPCC found that Instagram was used in 32 percent of those instances, Facebook in 23 percent, and Snapchat in 14 percent, citing data obtained from police under Freedom of Information laws. The data shows that the use of Instagram as a tool for grooming has seen a 200 percent increase from 2017 to 2018 (over a period of approximately 18 months).  Read more...More about Instagram, Child Abuse, Nspcc, Tech, and Other

These wireless headphones share a cool feature with Apple's AirPods, plus they're on sale
1 mrt 11:00 - Admit it: Your current headphones no longer spark joy. They don't fit well, their sound quality leaves much to be desired, and if they haven't already broken, they're so shoddy that they probably will soon. So here you are, physically and emotionally ready for new listening equipment, but without a clue as to where you should begin your search. Frustratingly, most options out there feel like a compromise: Typical over-ear headphones, for example, provide great sound quality but tether you down with cords. Meanwhile, your average wireless earbuds offer the latest in audio technology, but at sky-high prices. Save over Ł1200 on this premium LG 4K smart OLED TV on Amazon
1 mrt 10:07 - Just because something isn't the latest model to hit the shelves doesn't mean that it isn't still a quality product.  Take the LG 55-inch Premium 4K Ultra HD HDR Smart OLED TV, for example. You can tell just by the amount of letters and numbers in its name that it's packed full of stunning technology. It's the 2017 model, so it's certainly not the newest of LG's TVs, but the result is that the price of this model is dramatically cut. You can now pick up the LG 55-inch Premium 4K Smart OLED TV for £1068, reduced from £2299.99. That is an enormous reduction on the list price, saving you a whopping £1231.99, or 54%. A drop in price like this is down to the fact that there are newer models of the same TV on the market. But why pay more when this TV still has so much going for it? Twitter looks to let you hide replies to your tweets
1 mrt 06:03 - Twitter has been hiding replies from what it deems to be suspect or troll accounts for a little while now. It's a neat feature to help filter out questionable replies (or that reply guy), and now Twitter is looking to expand on it, essentially creating a way to moderate your replies. SEE ALSO: Dr. Bronner's is the only good brand on Twitter As posted by serial feature spotter Jane Manchun Wong, you'll soon be able to choose whether to hide replies to your tweets. This feature hides replies not just for yourself, but to other people viewing the conversation too. "Hide tweet" will be accessible in a menu, and it appears you'll be able to view all the tweets you've hidden too. Tesla's 'Full Self-Driving' feature is back on Autopilot
1 mrt 03:30 - Tesla made a big announcement Thursday about a Tesla Model 3 electric car that starts at $35,000, but other new options popped up on the Tesla website under the Autopilot section, like the semi-autonomous driving feature. Full self-driving mode was pulled as an option back in October, but now it's back as a rebranded "Navigate on Autopilot" package with "future features coming later this year." As of today, there are two Autopilot packages. The first is just called Autopilot and gives the car auto-steering and advanced cruise control. The basic version is $3,000 to include upfront.  Then there's the package option called "Full Self-Driving Capability." As Tesla CEO Elon Musk explained in a press call Thursday afternoon, it's "feature complete," but that doesn't mean you can use all those features. It still is the more advanced Navigate on Autopilot, which allows the car to drive mostly on its own (with you still at the wheel and paying attention) on highways only.  Read more...More about Tesla, Autopilot, Autonomous Vehicles, Tech, and Transportation

TikTok just locked out a ton of users, and people can't take it
1 mrt 01:29 - When life gives you lemons, make sure to squeeze all that lemon juice straight into your eyes and then rage about it on Twitter. That seems to be the thinking of scores of TikTok users who, on Feb. 27, found themselves suddenly locked out of the looping video app following the company's FTC-inspired effort to temporarily suspend accounts belonging to people under the age of 13.  What no one appears to have first considered, however, is the fact that some now-exiled users entered fake birthdays when creating their accounts — meaning many of those suspended accounts belong to actual adults.  Or, if not adults, at least not kids.  Read more...More about Tiktok, Tech, and Social Media Companies

Amazon kills physical Dash buttons
1 mrt 01:10 - Bad news, Amazon Prime addicts: the company is no longer selling its Dash buttons. As of today, the company will no longer sell the magical plastic buttons that let you summon refills of laundry detergent, paper towels, and Trojan condoms at will. The company will, however, continue to support existing buttons. SEE ALSO: Amazon patents delivery robot that docks at your house If you're bummed about that, it appears that Alexa may be largely to blame for Amazon's decision. Shared scooters barely last a month, report says. But that could change.
28 feb 23:10 - It's tough out there for an e-scooter. The battery-powered vehicles used by most scooter-sharing companies weren't intended for such heavy use. The first generation of shared scooters were mainly from Xioami, and not made with the type of usage scooter rental companies like Bird put the vehicle through.  Alison Griswold in her Overshare newsletter about the sharing economy crunched the numbers this week from Louisville, Kentucky's scooter-share program. It's based mostly on Bird rides and found between August and December the average lifespan of a scooter there was 28 days. 5G will be crazy fast, but it'll be worthless without unlimited data
28 feb 19:51 - Mobile World Congress might have you convinced of two major mobile trends for 2019: foldable phones and 5G. Foldable phones are undeniably interesting — we finally have real phones that transform into tablets with larger screens! — but 5G, the next generation of faster and more reliable cellular connectivity, has the potential to truly change how we live and work, even if foldable phones end up becoming a fad. At MWC 2019, companies from all corners of the globe tripped over each other to showcase a near future where high-resolution movies would download in seconds, expansive 3D games and VR would be streamed directly to phones and new headsets, and smart cars (self-driving or not) would be able to recognize each other to prevent collisions. OnePlus CEO not impressed by folding phones
28 feb 16:56 - BARCELONA — OnePlus CEO Pete Lau, who is very picky about corners, doesn't like the ones he sees on the folding phones here at MWC19. "It's not product excellence, having to stop at that level of large curvature," he said through a translator. "My focus is on the flexible OLED technology, and as that advances and gets really good, what possibilities there are. When those fields can get really small and tight, what possibilities are there for the screen technology?" Of course Lau would be talking about the degrees of fold. The cult phone-maker CEO, who has an engineering background, is informally known as the chief product designer at OnePlus, and once showed me how he obsessed over the corner radius when developing the OnePlus 6. Critics call NYPD's drone deployment 'a serious threat to privacy
8 dec 22:49 - Drones are coming to New York City, and that should worry you.  So argues the New York Civil Liberties Union, which in a Dec. 7 statement blasts the forthcoming NYPD deployment of the flying surveillance bots as "a serious threat to privacy." The 14 police drones, which the New York Times reports had been acquired by city police in June, are ostensibly to be used for tasks like keeping an eye on large crowds or hostage situations. However, critics see the deployment as the start of a very slippery, privacy-eroding slope.  After all, large crowds of people often gather together to lawfully protest something like, say, police brutality. Or, as the NYPD specifically notes as a drone-appropriate example (according to the NYCLU), the Women's March.  Read more...More about Drones, Surveillance, Nypd, Tech, and Drones

50 years ago, Douglas Engelbart's ‘Mother of All Demos’ changed personal technology forever

Run your family life, all from one app? Cozi promises you can
8 dec 13:00 - Welcome to Small Humans, an ongoing series at Mashable that looks at how to take care of – and deal with – the kids in your life. Because Dr. Spock is nice and all, but it’s 2018 and we have the entire internet to contend with. Modern life in general can often be a logistical nightmare, but adding kids to the mix takes domestic air traffic control to a whole new level. The premise of an app built with precisely this use-case in mind may seem like a godsend for any Gcal-overloaded caregiver, but Cozi, which bills itself as an app that can "simplify" family life, also runs the risk of contributing to the problem it attempts to solve.  Read more...More about Family Parenting, Calendar Apps, Small Humans, Small Humans, and Tech

Grab one of Samsung's high-end QLED TVs for $800 off (and $300 cheaper than Amazon's price)
8 dec 11:00 - If you're out of the loop, Amazon and Best Buy are doing some 12 Days and 20 Days of deals tech events to give us something to salivate over now that Black Friday weekend is over. We'll admit that some of their TV deals are pretty good, but don't jump the gun — we're about to do you one better.  The 65-inch model of Samsung's fancy QLED series is only $2,199 at the PCMag Shop. For reference, that's $800 off the original price and $300 less than Amazon and Best Buy's sale prices on the same TV. You're welcome. Samsung's Q8F models are truly top of the line, just one notch beneath their most premium creation yet: The Q9F. But the thing is, unless you're weirdly intense about graphics, you're probably not going to notice the minute variations in dimming technology or the difference between Q HDR Elite and EliteMax. The place where you will notice a difference, however, is in your wallet.  Read more...More about Samsung, Smart Tvs, Mashable Shopping, Shopping Solo, and Qled

Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg face off in Epic Rap Battles of History
7 dec 23:43 - Oooohhhhhh, the Epic Rap Battles of History video guys are back after a two-year hiatus, and they're coming for two of the most shade-able figures in the tech world: Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. Epic Rap Battles is a video series that pits public figures against each other with fictional and non-fictional beefs. In 2016, their two rhyme spitters where none other than, you guessed it, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. This time around, the robotic Zuckerberg faces off against the pompous Musk. Each  brags about their achievements, and rags on the other for their personal and professional, erm, shortcomings. Arrested Huawei CFO potentially faces decades in jail
7 dec 21:27 - Things are not looking up for Huawei's CFO.  Wanzhou Meng, arrested Dec. 1 in Vancouver and facing possible extradition to the U.S., had a bail hearing today in which it was made clear that she is looking at some serious jail time for allegedly misrepresenting to authorities the relationship between Huawei and SkyCom, which did business in Iran.  According to AP, the prosecutor said she portrayed the two companies as separate, while the U.S. claims Huawei and SkyCom are connected, and thus Huawei violated U.S. sanctions against Iran.  SEE ALSO: China demands release of Huawei executive arrested in Canada Read more...More about China, Huawei, Tech, and Big Tech Companies

Elon Musk tells '60 Minutes' he has 'no idea' how to smoke weed
7 dec 21:09 - Tesla CEO Elon Musk took a puff off a joint three months ago and people are still talking about it.  In a preview Friday for an upcoming 60 Minutes interview with Lesley Stahl, Musk defends his brush with marijuana.  "I am somewhat impulsive and don't want to adhere to some CEO template," he says. When she grills him on the pot, he replies, "I do not smoke pot. As anyone who watched that podcast can tell I have no idea how to smoke pot, or anything." SEE ALSO: OK, everybody: Stop pot-shaming Elon Musk It's pretty evident from footage of Joe Rogan's podcast that Musk didn't inhale and didn't really know what he was doing, but it hasn't stopped everyone from Fox News to NASA from making the smoking incident into a huge deal. This neural-net powered AI is way better at chess than anyone
7 dec 19:34 - Checkmate. Competitive and casual chess players alike now have a new foe. In addition to computers, there's a new AI platform called AlphaZero that can totally beat us all. SEE ALSO: An AI wrote the script for this movie, and let's just say there's eyeball vomiting in it AlphaZero is from DeepMind Technologies, a subsidiary under Alphabet, which is Google's parent company. It can tackle not only chess, but also shogi and Go — two equally difficult, if not even more challenging, games.  AlphaZero comes after many years of research, succeeding AlphaGo Zero from last year, the world's best Go player. But this time around there wasn't any human help. AlphaZero taught itself how to play from scratch.  Read more...More about Google, Ai, Chess, Deepmind, and Alphazero

Google to personalize audio-based news over assistant software
7 dec 19:04 - Listening to the news over a Google Home smart speaker is going to get more useful. On Thursday, Google announced a new effort to personalize the audio news feed available through the company's digital assistant software. The goal behind the project is to create a radio station that caters to your interests, Google product manager Liz Gannes said in a blog post. It'll also be smart enough to avoid repeating the same new stories you've already heard during the day. The company's AI-powered algorithms on Google News can already personalize text-based articles for you by looking at what topics you like to read and your search history. Now the tech giant is bringing some of the same technologies to the audio realm. Read more...More about Google, Google News, Google Assistant, Tech, and Consumer Tech
