Twitter's Jack Dorsey gets roasted for his ignorant tweets about Myanmar
9 dec 20:16 - Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey shared with the world what he did on his most recent birthday: travel to Myanmar and do a 10-day silent meditation. Dorsey made a thread on Twitter explaining the experience, and hundreds of people chimed in to remind Jack of the genocide happening in Myanmar that's been perpetuated by social media, how funny it is that he paid money to get bit by mosquitos, and his general rich white guy privilege. SEE ALSO: Laura Loomer's IRL Twitter protest has become ... a Twitter meme For my birthday this year, I did a 10-day silent vipassana meditation, this time in Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar 🇲🇲. We went into silence on the night of my birthday, the 19th. Here’s what I know 👇🏼 — jack (@jack) December 9, 2018 Read more... More about Twitter, Jack Dorsey, Myanmar, Tech, and Big Tech Companies

SantaCon is back to make you regret moving to the city
9 dec 00:14 - It's the most wonderful time of the year.  That's right, cities around the globe are celebrating that most modern of holidays on Saturday: SantaCon. The annual gathering of revelers dressed as Santa Claus may have originated in San Francisco as a radical act of anti-consumerist mischief, but it has since morphed into a worldwide day of debauchery and excess that feels just about right for our sinking-ship hellscape of a reality.  Thankfully for us, it's a well-documented hellscape. So let's take a peek, shall we?  SEE ALSO: Thousands of Santas take over New York City to spread rowdy holiday cheer Read more...More about Santacon, Tech, and Live Events

Critics call NYPD's drone deployment 'a serious threat to privacy
8 dec 22:49 - Drones are coming to New York City, and that should worry you.  So argues the New York Civil Liberties Union, which in a Dec. 7 statement blasts the forthcoming NYPD deployment of the flying surveillance bots as "a serious threat to privacy." The 14 police drones, which the New York Times reports had been acquired by city police in June, are ostensibly to be used for tasks like keeping an eye on large crowds or hostage situations. However, critics see the deployment as the start of a very slippery, privacy-eroding slope.  After all, large crowds of people often gather together to lawfully protest something like, say, police brutality. Or, as the NYPD specifically notes as a drone-appropriate example (according to the NYCLU), the Women's March.  Read more...More about Drones, Surveillance, Nypd, Tech, and Drones

Leaked images show what Samsung Galaxy S10 might look like
8 dec 19:52 - Samsung's Galaxy 10 is coming and while we already know it's going to be feature-packed like no other Samsung phone before, we didn't have any idea what it looks like... until now. Two of most-respected phone leakers Evan Blass (@evleaks) and Ice Universe (@Universeice) have had a busy past few days posting images of what they claim are the Galaxy S10.  The Galaxy S10 won't be a foldable phone, but if the leaks are genuine, Samsung's new phones will definitely turn heads. SEE ALSO: Samsung's Galaxy S10 sounds like it's gonna be more of everything. That could be a problem. A Wall Street Journal report in late November claimed Samsung was preparing three Galaxy S10 phones with varying display sizes between 5.8 to 6.4 inches. Apple's latest business move hints at a Netflix-like approach with Apple Music
8 dec 17:32 - The music streaming war between Apple Music and Spotify is heating up. As part of what appears to a be series of moves to grow Apple Music, Apple has acquired Platoon, a London-based company that discovers and develops artists by giving them the resources they need to create music and forge relationships with labels. SEE ALSO: Surprise! Apple Music is coming to the Amazon Echo Music Business Worldwide first reported the acquisition. It's not clear how much Apple paid for Platoon; the company makes many acquisitions during a year, but never discloses the amount exchanged. Buying Platoon gives us possible insight on where Apple sees Apple Music is headed: original content that might be release music either exclusively or for a period of exclusivity on the music streaming service. 50 years ago, Douglas Engelbart's ‘Mother of All Demos’ changed personal technology forever
8 dec 15:00 - Imagine someone demonstrating a jet plane 15 years before Kitty Hawk. Imagine someone demonstrating a smartphone 15 years before the first cellular networks were even launched. Imagine someone demonstrating a controlled nuclear chain reaction 15 years before Einstein formulated e=mc2. On a crisp, overcast, and breezy Monday afternoon in San Francisco on December 9, 1968, before an SRO audience of more than 2,000 slack-jawed computer engineers, a soft-spoken engineer named Douglas Engelbart held the first public demonstration of word processing, point-and-clicking, dragging-and-dropping, hypermedia and hyperlinking, cross-file editing, idea/outline processing, collaborative groupware, text messaging, onscreen real-time video teleconferencing, and a weird little device dubbed a "mouse" — the essentials of a graphical user interface (GUI) 15 years before the first personal computers went on sale. Run your family life, all from one app? Cozi promises you can
8 dec 13:00 - Welcome to Small Humans, an ongoing series at Mashable that looks at how to take care of – and deal with – the kids in your life. Because Dr. Spock is nice and all, but it’s 2018 and we have the entire internet to contend with. Modern life in general can often be a logistical nightmare, but adding kids to the mix takes domestic air traffic control to a whole new level. The premise of an app built with precisely this use-case in mind may seem like a godsend for any Gcal-overloaded caregiver, but Cozi, which bills itself as an app that can "simplify" family life, also runs the risk of contributing to the problem it attempts to solve.  Read more...More about Family Parenting, Calendar Apps, Small Humans, Small Humans, and Tech

Grab one of Samsung's high-end QLED TVs for $800 off (and $300 cheaper than Amazon's price)
8 dec 11:00 - If you're out of the loop, Amazon and Best Buy are doing some 12 Days and 20 Days of deals tech events to give us something to salivate over now that Black Friday weekend is over. We'll admit that some of their TV deals are pretty good, but don't jump the gun — we're about to do you one better.  The 65-inch model of Samsung's fancy QLED series is only $2,199 at the PCMag Shop. For reference, that's $800 off the original price and $300 less than Amazon and Best Buy's sale prices on the same TV. You're welcome. Samsung's Q8F models are truly top of the line, just one notch beneath their most premium creation yet: The Q9F. But the thing is, unless you're weirdly intense about graphics, you're probably not going to notice the minute variations in dimming technology or the difference between Q HDR Elite and EliteMax. The place where you will notice a difference, however, is in your wallet.  Read more...More about Samsung, Smart Tvs, Mashable Shopping, Shopping Solo, and Qled

7 dec 21:27 - Things are not looking up for Huawei's CFO.  Wanzhou Meng, arrested Dec. 1 in Vancouver and facing possible extradition to the U.S., had a bail hearing today in which it was made clear that she is looking at some serious jail time for allegedly misrepresenting to authorities the relationship between Huawei and SkyCom, which did business in Iran.  According to AP, the prosecutor said she portrayed the two companies as separate, while the U.S. claims Huawei and SkyCom are connected, and thus Huawei violated U.S. sanctions against Iran.  SEE ALSO: China demands release of Huawei executive arrested in Canada Read more...More about China, Huawei, Tech, and Big Tech Companies

Elon Musk tells '60 Minutes' he has 'no idea' how to smoke weed
7 dec 21:09 - Tesla CEO Elon Musk took a puff off a joint three months ago and people are still talking about it.  In a preview Friday for an upcoming 60 Minutes interview with Lesley Stahl, Musk defends his brush with marijuana.  "I am somewhat impulsive and don't want to adhere to some CEO template," he says. When she grills him on the pot, he replies, "I do not smoke pot. As anyone who watched that podcast can tell I have no idea how to smoke pot, or anything." Google to personalize audio-based news over assistant software
7 dec 19:04 - Listening to the news over a Google Home smart speaker is going to get more useful. On Thursday, Google announced a new effort to personalize the audio news feed available through the company's digital assistant software. The goal behind the project is to create a radio station that caters to your interests, Google product manager Liz Gannes said in a blog post. It'll also be smart enough to avoid repeating the same new stories you've already heard during the day. The company's AI-powered algorithms on Google News can already personalize text-based articles for you by looking at what topics you like to read and your search history. Now the tech giant is bringing some of the same technologies to the audio realm. Read more...More about Google, Google News, Google Assistant, Tech, and Consumer Tech

Apple patent contains clues about the 2020 AirPods redesign
7 dec 18:41 - We're starting to learn more about what the rumored 2020 AirPods redesign might look like. A recent Apple patent filing shows how the company may make changes to the AirPods in years to come. Spotted by 9to5Mac, the filing contains specs for biometric sensors, noise-canceling, and even the introduction of expandable foam to better fit every ear.  SEE ALSO: Apple antitrust lawsuit heads to the Supreme Court As with all exciting patent filings, it comes with ~drawings~. Expandable foam could help redesigned AirPods fit snugly in any ear.Image: apple/us patent and trademark officeThe abstract of the patent focuses on the ability of a biometric sensor that sits close to the skin to adjust its output based on its location. That is, AirPods could be worn "interchangeably," and determine what to play, when to stop, and other features, based on its proximity to its human. That could even include noise cancelation. Coinbase Bundle performance tracker reveals the sad state of the crypto market
7 dec 17:52 - If you bought a lot Bitcoin in 2011, you'd be rich now.  But if you bought Bitcoin a year ago, or even a month ago...well, let's just say your portfolio would be a pretty sad sight.  Which is why it's funny that cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase still has this chart on its webpage.  Ouch.Image: CoinbaseThe chart, featured quite prominently on Coinbase's site and noticed recently by Dogecoin creator Jackson Palmer, tracks the performance of an imaginary $100 investment in Coinbase Bundle, a sort of fund that tracks the prices of the top 5 cryptocurrencies by market cap, listed on Coinbase: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin and Ethereum Classic.  Read more...More about Coinbase, Coinbase Bundle, Tech, and Cryptocurrency Blockchain

Xiaomi's next phone might have a 48-megapixel camera
7 dec 17:49 - The smartphone megapixel wars aren't over yet.  Chinese electronics company Xiaomi teased a new smartphone with a 48-megapixel camera, a record for the company, and as far as we can recall, an all-time record in popular consumer electronics, beating Nokia's 41-megapixel 808 PureView phone.  As noted by Android Central, the phone is also likely to have Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 675 chip.  SEE ALSO: The 5G iPhone probably isn't coming until 2020 As extravagant as 48 megapixels sound, it actually makes a lot of sense. Huawei's Mate 20 Pro has a 40-megapixel main camera, but, by default, it uses the information gathered by the sensor to create better-looking 10-megapixel photos. If Xiaomi goes the same route, its new phone will likely default to 12-megapixel photos while benefiting from the details gathered by the 48-megapixel sensor.  Read more...More about Xiaomi, Smartphone Camera, 48 Megapixels, Tech, and Big Tech Companies

In true Musk fashion, Boring Company test tunnel opening pushed back a week
7 dec 02:07 - Long criticized for his time management skills, billionaire inventor Elon Musk is once again behind schedule on a major project. A big public opening experience was scheduled for Tuesday, but a company spokesperson emailed over a new date set for Dec. 18. SEE ALSO: Elon Musk's neighbors scuttled plans for his West LA tunnel Musk tweeted about the delay, expertly spinning it as an improved event that just needs a bit more attention and time to pull off. My dog nanny cam turned me into a helicopter dog mom
7 dec 01:32 - Nymeria howls. That impressive vocal ability was just part of what I learned about my newly adopted pup, Nymeria (aka "Meerie"), as I watched her, pacing and barking non-stop, from a dog nanny cam live feed on my phone, while I sat in my office, miles away.  I was heartbroken.  I thought she was adjusting, doing fine! But a livestreamed feed showed me that her adorable affection while I was around translated to separation anxiety when I wasn't. On the live feed, I had to watch her clearly suffering, or at best bored, and there was not much I could do about it. Microsoft wants regulation to keep the 'facial recognition genie' in the bottle
7 dec 00:00 - There's no time like the present to slow the tide of a technology-enabled facilitation of discrimination aided by facial recognition.  So, somewhat surprisingly, argues one key developer of said facial recognition tech: Microsoft.  On Dec. 6, Microsoft president Brad Smith released an over 3,500-word blog post detailing his concerns with the aforementioned technology and calling for immediate government regulation. The post gets straight to the point, noting that as a society we can't risk waiting any longer. SEE ALSO: Think twice about posting photos of your kid on Facebook "The facial recognition genie, so to speak, is just emerging from the bottle," reads the post in part. "Unless we act, we risk waking up five years from now to find that facial recognition services have spread in ways that exacerbate societal issues." A bizarre Instagram glitch is the reason your feed is messed up
6 dec 22:56 - If Instagram looks a little off to you right now, you're not alone: the app is experiencing a strange glitch that is messing with users' feeds. The issue is causing bars to appear over images, making them look like they are the product of a scrambled VHS tape or some strange new filter. The source of the problem is unclear, but it appears to be fairly widespread, with confused and upset users taking to Twitter to complain. The good news is that Instagram has confirmed it's an issue on their end, which means there's nothing wrong with your phone. The bad news is it's not clear how long it will take for the company to come up with a fix.  Read more...More about Tech, Instagram, Tech, and Social Media Companies

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8cx chip for Windows 10 laptops could end Intel's dominance
6 dec 22:00 - Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips dominate mobile — you'll find them in almost every Android phone and tablet — and now they're ready to invade Intel's main turf: PCs. On the third day of its annual Snapdragon Technology Summit, the world's largest mobile chipmaker unveiled the Snapdragon 8cx system-on-a-chip (SoC). It's created with a 7-nanometer process, similar to Apple's A12 and A12X chips, which are in the iPhone XS/XS Max/XR and new iPad Pros. Qualcomm previously tested the PC waters with the Snapdragon 835 and 850 chips, but now it's ready for a full assault on Intel's territory. This could very well be the beginning of the end to Intel's vice-like grip powering PCs. Read more...More about Intel, Pc, Windows 10, Laptops, and Qualcomm

Move over HODL, it's time to BUIDL
6 dec 16:40 - If you have any interest in the cryptocurrency space that's bubbled last year and deflated this year, you've probably heard of the term HODL. It's a misspelling of the word "hold," originating from a post on the Bitcoin Talk forum in 2013, that has since taken a very specific meaning: holding (not selling) cryptocurrency no matter what.  And while crypto-enthusiasts have been encouraging each other to hodl their coins amidst the crypto-carnage of 2018, many are now focusing on a similarly misspelled word with a very different meaning: BUIDL.  And we'll likely see more of it in the future. The Next Web reports the word has recently been trademarked by cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase.  Read more...More about Bitcoin, Ethereum, Cryptocurrency, Hodl, and Buidl

The two heart-related features were introduced at the revamped smartwatch's debut in September and are now finally available via a software update. SEE ALSO: Apple products are pricier than ever. Why that’s bad news for its future.
